Getting a clean, dry, well-defined margin is often the difference between a good impression and a remake. The 3M Astringent Retraction Paste gives clinicians a simple way to achieve gentle tissue displacement and reliable hemostasis without the time and discomfort traditionally associated with retraction cord.
Formulated with 15% aluminium chloride, this high-viscosity paste is delivered straight into the gingival sulcus through a slim, extra-fine tip. As it fills the sulcus, it gently eases the marginal gingiva away from the tooth while controlling moisture and minor bleeding — leaving a crisp preparation margin ready for capture. Because each capsule is pre-dosed and single-use, you get consistent application every time with no cross-contamination risk, and it loads into most standard composite dispensers, so there’s no separate applicator to buy.
The paste suits both conventional and digital workflows, making it a versatile option whether you’re taking a traditional impression, scanning intraorally, or prepping for Class II and Class V restorations.
Why clinicians choose it
- 15% aluminium chloride astringent formula for dependable hemostasis and moisture control
- Extra-fine tip places paste precisely at the base of the sulcus
- Gentle, atraumatic retraction of healthy marginal tissue
- Works with or without retraction cord, depending on how much deflection you need
- Single-use, pre-measured capsules for hygiene and consistency
- Compatible with most composite dispensers — no dedicated gun required
- 0.3 g per capsule, enough to treat up to three teeth
- Optimised for both material-based and digital impressions
Clinical uses
Ideal for temporary retraction of healthy marginal gingiva during conventional and digital impressions, temporary cast preparation, Class II and Class V restorations, and seating of temporary or permanent restorations.
Directions in brief
Express and discard a little paste first, then insert the tip into the sulcus and inject slowly until it’s fully packed. Leave for at least two minutes, then rinse away completely with air-water spray and suction. Add retraction cord if greater deflection is needed.
